Agriculture Educational Center
In 2018 the UbF volunteers learned of the severe malnutrition that is pervasive in the remote region of the Zona Reyna, Guatemala. Children that we had come to know were dying for lack of essential vitamins and amino acids in their diets. When the community leaders requested assistance with improving the nutrition, UbF responded. With the help of our donors, we were able to build an agriculture Learning Center, where farmers are introduced to a variety of crops, such as green leafy vegetables and advanced variety of corn, that will improve their nutrition. The local families are now learning about the importance of sustainable planting and harvesting methods to maintain the natural minerals in the soil for the benefit of future generations.
We believe that by working in collaboration with the Guatemalan communities, while respecting their values and traditions, we can have a sustainable impact in decreasing malnutrition and thereby make a lasting difference. We want to acknowledge the collaboration of the Peace Corps, select Rotary Clubs of southern Texas, the people of the Zona Reyna and YOU, who all contributed to this effort.
