Classrooms for Caracol

Guatemalans value the education of their children and sacrifice to ensure they have the uniforms, shoes and school supplies required to attend school.  The teachers of the K’iche Mayan village of Caracol enjoy teaching these precious children but have been struggling to accommodate all their students in just three small classrooms.   Thanks to a grant from the ACAD Cerami Foundation, United by Friendship was able to respond to this need by constructing and furnishing two additional large classrooms and refurbishing the school’s bathrooms.

The day of April 19, 2012 dawned bright and crisp as UbF volunteers traveled to this distant village to celebrate the inauguration of the new classrooms with the students, faculty and parents. The ceremonies began with a salute to the Guatemalan flag and the singing of the Guatemalan national anthem - and then to the amazement of the volunteers the student carried in the banner of the United States and played the Star Spangled Banner.  The volunteers were all very moved by this unexpected honor and sang out the anthem’s words as never before.  Team leader, Deborah Simon, who has been involved in projects in Guatemala for 22 years, reported this is the first time she had witnessed such a tribute to the volunteers.  It is what United by Friendship is all about – uniting in goodwill and friendship to help communities achieve their goals.
