Water System for Chipaj and Lagunita
The village of Chipaj is known for its generosity, as evidenced by how its residents have shared their water.
Over 30 years ago, CARE helped a small cluster of families bring water
from a hilltop spring down to their homes by means of gravity. Over the years
this small cluster has grown to 176 families. The original families
have tried to help their neighbors by giving them water by hose from their own faucets. However, the small
distribution tank intended for 16 families and the spliced hose system, while well intended, are unable
to meet the water needs for the growing community. Additionally, Chipaj had promised the neighboring
village of Lagunita that if the day came that Chipaj was able to build a new water system they would
share their water with Lagunita.
United by Friendship was moved by their plight and generosity to help the residents of Chipaj and their neighbors.
Thanks to a grant by the ACAD Foundation for World Health,
UbF is able to provide Chipaj with the materials to construct a chlorinated water system that will benefit
both communities. The local county government is providing the engineering and the people of the
village are providing the manual labor. This project is currently under construction and scheduled
to be completed in December 2011.
